Whether you are looking for a 'standard' specification engine rebuild, a fast road / improved power build, or something more specific, the build process is the same.
Looking to get your engine rebuilt?
What are the first steps?
Firstly, a telephone conversation is best to be able to run through the many options and to get a build spec that suits your driving use and requirements. From here we will make arrangements for your engine to be delivered to us. You can bring your engine yourself and take the opportunity to have a tour around the facility, chat with Peter regarding the work required and what you would like to achieve from the build. Or we can arrange the collection from your home via our trusted engine collection company. You would simply strap your engine to a pallet and we organize the rest.
Once the engine arrives with us it is given a job number and allocated a space and production time frame.
We strip the engine and carry out initial cleaning and inspection. from this point we make contact with you to discuss findings and tweak any build specifications.
On to the build.
The major components such as the cylinder block, head, crankshaft are put through a deep clean process involving a de rusting dip tank. This process removes all of the years of congestion and build up in and around the oil galleries and water passages. It takes these components back to bare metal and as factory supplied finish. From here the machining is carried out to the required sizes and specification.
The cylinder block is bore & fine honed to size. Then the top face is skimmed to ensure flat.
The camshaft bearing bores and the cam follower bores are honed and cleaned.
All the threads cleaned, checked and tapped. Thread repairs carried out where required.
New cam bearings are fitted and bored. A new camshaft installed to the required spec and checked for correct free turning and end float.
Next we carryout the required machining and fitting of the new rear lip seal modification for the crank.
The con-rods are cleaned, checked, honed on the big ends, balanced and fitted with new quality fixings.
New pistons are fitted to the con-rods and a first fit is carried out to check the piston top deck height is correct. machining carried out if required and the piston / conrod assemblies balanced.
Rings are fitted to the pistons and the con-rod and piston assembly is fitted to the block.
Next the crankshaft is re ground, balanced and fitted to the cylinder block with new quality mains bearings, high tensile studs and modern nylock nuts.
The flywheel is re faced, a new ring gear fitted, balanced then fitted to the crankshaft.
The timing gears, chain and tensioner are fitted. then the camshaft timing is checked and set accordingly.
Timing cover fitted with a modern lip seal conversion
Oil pump is completely refurbished and the gears set with the correct clearance. Top cap is refaced and the oil pressure relief valve seat recut.
The sump is cleaned, checked and new thread inserts fitted where required. The oil pick up fitted and the sump assembly placed onto the cylinder block.
Next is the cylinder head.
Having already been placed in a de rusting bath, it is machined, new bronze guides fitted along with stellite faced valves. The exhaust seats are machined to accept the new hardened seats ready for lead-free fuel.
The head is skimmed minimum to ensure flat and good sealing around the gasket.
Improved valve stem seals are fitted along with new springs and the head fitted to the cylinder block.
New quality head studs, nuts and multi layer head gasket.
Rocker assembly is rebuilt with new shaft, bushes, adjusters, locking nuts.
New improved cam followers with elongated oiling slots to improve oiling to the camshaft.
New water pump.
The completed engine.
Beautifully detailed and finished off in the correct MG dark red with polished brass fixings.
We are happy to accommodate any detailing changes or alternative colours you may have / prefer.
Testing and information
The completed engine is then fitted to our bespoke engine testing rig.
We carryout a number of short run tests to ensure that the engine performs at it should. Checking for oil leaks, water leaks, noises and any running abnormalities.
The engine is run using our own 'test rig' ancillaries such as starter, carbs, manifolds etc.
We can run the engine utilising your own equipment if you would like the engine to be set up with your carbs etc.
Once all the testing is completed, the engine is signed off and removed from the rig, cleaned and checked ready to be returned to the customer.
An engine rebuild is a significant cost during the ownership of any car, so when considering this, it is natural to ponder if the overall value of the car will be effected. The answer is yes.
A full and detailed engine rebuild will increase the value, but only if you can show the work that has been carried out, and by whom.
A unique item that we supply with all of our engine rebuilds, is the engine booklet.
This 20 plus page booklet, presented in its own folder, includes pictures of the engine rebuild throughout the process, the specification sheet detailing the build, parts used and settings required. A detailed running in sheet is also included to instruct the correct way to care for your new engine during its first steps into the world.
So as you can see, detail and care are foremost in our engine refurbishment.
So not only will this increase the value of your car but give you the enjoyment of a beautifully smooth, powerful engine, taking the driving sensation of your T Series MG to another level.
We truly believe that you will not find a better XPAG / XPEG engine rebuild anywhere else.
